Ackley Police Department

Keeping the Peace Since the Sixties (1860's That Is)

We welcome you to the Ackley Police Department’s Website. Ackley is located on the intersection of the old the old transcontinental routes, “The Grant Highway” (Formerly US 20, now State 57) and “The Glacier Trail” (County S-56). We are centered in a circumference of Mason City, Fort Dodge, Ames, Marshalltown and Waterloo.

The Ackley Police Department is currently a four full time officer law enforcement agency. We also have six current Reserve Police Officers that we use for emergencies, celebrations or if we are short handed with full time staff. Our main goals are safety to the public, the prevention of crime and community policing. On July 31, 1996 the Ackley Police Department was awarded the “Congressional Community Policing Award” from U.S. Senator Tom Harken, for achievement in fighting crime through community policing.

We have a police officer on duty 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The dayshift officer’s hours are from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The nightshift officer runs 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM.

Ackley is a very friendly multi cultural community, mostly of German and Mexican descent. This is a town where the citizens have always “pulled together” to work out any problems. Ackley has always had history of sporting a very low juvenile delinquency problem. The children and teenagers of this community are tops. An excellent school system and proper parenting are the main factors of this community benefit.

All our Year-end Reports since 1992, which was the beginning of our 24-hour patrol, shows that Ackley, Iowa has a very low crime rate along with the Police Department's high convection rate.  One prime example; in 2002 Ackley had six Burglaries but tallied seven Burglary arrests. Prior to 1992, without the 24-hour shifts, it was nothing for Ackley to score 35 to 50 burglaries a year. Security is very important to its citizens and for industrial development and having a patrol car roaming at all hours deters the criminal element from invading our safety and property.

In October of 2004, we moved into our new police station.  We took residence in the East 1/2 of the old Illinois-Central Railroad Depot.  The Ackley Preservation Committee was awarded a $300,000 D.O.T. grant to restore the old railway building.  Dr. Robert M. Swasand wrote up the grand and the Ackley contractor, Bernard H. Boekholder, of Boekholder Construction, headed up the renovation project.  All our new office equipment was provided free by the U.S. Military Surplus and also with monies from the 911 fund.  So the cost of the police department to move was very minimal.

On October 6, 2004 we had our open house and also celebrated the Police Department's 135th Birthday!   We currently run our four full time police officer department on a fiscal budget that matches the allocations of most two-officer agencies.
