Good Neighbor Ordinances

The City of Ackley requests the cooperation of all residents in adhering to their Good Neighbor Ordinances. This collection of ordinances ensures that the actions of a neighbor does not lower the value or enjoyment of neighboring properties.

The ordinances prohibit the accumulation for storage of junk and junk vehicles on property unless kept in an enclosed structure.

Lots and properties shall be cut and mowed so that all plant growth other than trees, shrubs, and cultivated plants shall be less than ten inches at all times.

No more than 3 animals per household are allowed.  No animals can be allowed to run at large within the corporate limits of the city.  No dogs shall be allowed to create any annoyance or disturbance to persons by frequent howling or barking.  Dogs over four months of age must be licensed with the city.  Dogs defined as vicious must be confined or leashed and muzzled.

Dangerous animals are prohibited.

Property owners are responsible for clearing ice and snow from sidewalks within 24 hours.   Property owners  are also responsible for maintaining the parking by mowing grass and trimming trees and shrubs.  Trees in the parking can be removed only with city approval.  Dead or diseased trees in the parking will be removed by the city.

Other pertinent ordinances:

On street parking is not allowed from November 1 to April 30 for snow removal purposes.

Garbage pickup is every Friday with curbside recycling on every other Friday.  Additional garbage exceeding 35 gallons or 50 pounds per week must be tagged for pickup.

Property owners are responsible for all costs associated with the installation, replacement, and maintenance of the water service pipe from the water main to the building served, and for the installation, replacement, and maintenance of sewer service to the city main.  It is illegal for any residence to discharge groundwater or roof run-off from sump pumps and downspouts into the public sanitary sewer system.

Zoning regulation should be checked before the establishment of any business takes place.

No construction of buildings, fences, or additions to structures should take place unless all proper permits have been issued and ordinances checked.  The ordinances cited are non-inclusive and are summaries only.  The complete Code of Ordinances can be accessed at City Hall, 208 State Street, Ackley.

Thank you for your assistance and cooperation in abiding by these ordinances.
